Myrtle Beach expands zoning for 240-foot buildings

March 22, 2006 - Myrtle Beach City Council voted to extend a zoning district that offers the prospect of taller buildings to boost redevelopment downtown. The council approved the increase from 80 feet to 240 feet for much of the area in January but added several more blocks in a vote at their Tuesday meeting.

The new height limit is the tallest that architects say soil there will hold when building typical beachfront structures, using poured-in-place concrete walls, concrete columns and concrete slab.

Myrtle Beach, which began capping height in 1989, approved its tallest building in December, the 240-foot Atlantica 4.
