The Pavilion ~ Redevelopment opinions / ideas

Now that most folks have accepted that this will be the last summer for The Myrtle Beach Pavilion Amusement Park, some are chiming in with their ideas for what should replace it.

Some want to see Myrtle Beach get a new landmark, something that represents this place like the Gateway Arch does in St. Louis. The suggestions have ranged from a huge starfish statue to a tribute to the 58-year-old Pavilion.

“A lot of people wanted an icon for downtown, from something as large as a space needle to as small as a Pavilion museum, and everything in between,” said Pat Dowling, spokesman for Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc., which owns the 11-acre Pavilion.

Officials aren’t divulging all the ideas they’ve received. They also aren’t giving details on what will replace the park, other than to say it will be a mix of lodging towers, shops, restaurants and attractions.

The goal of overhauling the area is to create an environment that is hopping all year, not just during the summer.

“Everybody has a different take on what they want on those 11 acres,” Dowling said. “There is a big interest among locals to have a year-round local flavor to it so they have a place to go.”

The site, positioned on the oceanfront and at the end of U.S. 501, is a prime spot, said Brian Wurst, an architect with LS3P.

“It is a special piece of property and our survey respondents definitely understand that fact,” he said.

A final plan won’t be released until the fall, at the earliest.
